Aveda Network seeks to raise $4 million in April

Annual Earth Month Campaign to Raise Funds and Collective Consciousness in the Global Fight for Clean Water

MINNESOTA (April 2011) - During the month of April, Aveda's 2011 Earth Month campaign will inspire its network of beauty professionals and consumers in more than 30 countries around the globe to raise $4 million for the protection of clean water - a basic human right that nearly 900 million peoplei fight for daily.

More than 4,000 children in developing nations die each day from preventable conditions like diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking waterii. A person in a country like the U.S. will, on average, use more than 40 gallons of water to take just one, leisurely bath - while those living in developing nations may have access to less than eight gallons of water each day for all of their daily needsiii. In developing countries 70 percent of industrial waste and 80 percent of all waste is dumped untreated into waters, polluting the usable water supplyiv.

The stark disparities in access and rights to safe drinking water are startling enough to inspire much needed change - a movement that can empower communities, protect local watersheds and help make clean water accessible to everyone, everywhere. Aveda Earth Month 2011 will help to achieve this change.

Now in its 12th year, the annual Aveda Earth Month Campaign raises awareness and funds for critically important environmental challenges around the world. Since 1999 the Aveda network has raised more than $18 million for organizations that directly affect environmental change, and $12 million specifically for water-related causes over the past four years.



    Aveda's 2011 Light the Way™ soy wax candle features a stress-relieving aroma formulated with certified organic French lavender and is sold exclusively during Earth Month. One hundred percent of the purchase price ($12)v will be donated to Global Greengrants Fund for water-related projects (www.greengrants.org). Candle proceeds will total $1.34 million when all candles are sold.

    During the week of April 22, 2011 the global Aveda network will participate in an initiative to acknowledge and raise awareness of the daily struggle for clean water access around the world. The Aveda Walk for Water campaign: o Unites the Company's network and guests in a series of walks around the world. o Is executed locally by Aveda salons, spas and Institutes to benefit local water-related organizations. o Will extend six kilometers - the average distance that women in developing countries walk to collect water each day.

    Appointments for the Earth is a program that Aveda salons, spas and Institutes may organize individually to raise money for their local community. Aveda guests experience salon and spa services as usual and a portion of their service fee is donated to local not-for-profit organizations with water-focused missions.

Global Greengrants Fund provides small grants to grassroots organizations working for clean water, clean air, sustainable livelihoods and healthy communities around the world, and will be Aveda's exclusive global Earth Month Partner for the fifth consecutive year in 2011. Global Greengrants Fund will direct monies raised by Aveda to community-based water projects in more than 40 countries where Aveda does business.

Earth Month funds raised independently by thousands of Aveda salons, spas and Institutes will collectively support 35 regional partners in communities and countries worldwide. These partners are selected and work at the local level to preserve clean water and educate citizens about the global water crisis.
